KYPRIANOU: "We had a long exchange of views, with President Giscard d'Estaing. First of all, we... I believe I express his views also in saying we have agreed that the relations between France and Cyprus are excellent in every respect and improving in every field."

REPORTER: "Is there any chance of the negotiations between the two communities resuming on the island?"

KYPRIANOU: "On the basis of the latest Turkish proposal, there is no such chance, because these proposals are tantamount to partition or they, let's put it this way, they are an offer to us to accept to legalise the results of the invasion."

Background: The Cypriot President, Mr. Spyros Kyprianou, visiting Paris, has ruled out any chance of resuming peace negotiations on Cyprus on the basis of the latest Turkish-Cypriot proposals. After talks with President Valery Giscard d'Estaing he told reporters that these latest proposals were "tantamount to partition" of the island.

SYNOPSIS: President Kyprianou was at the Elysee Palace for talks with the French President during a brief visit to Paris on his way home from the United Nations disarmament conference. During their talks, the Cypriot leader briefed President Giscard on the latest developments in Cyprus.

After informal talks, President Kyprianou said President Giscard had accepted an invitation to visit Cyprus. But he was scathing on the latest Turkish proposals for the island which he later told newsmen, represented an offer for Cyprus to legalise the result of the Turkish invasion of the island.
