Background: United states authorities have refused to comment on accusations that Arab guerrillas were responsible for the killing in Washington on Sunday (1 July) of Israeli diplomat, Colonel Yosep Along. No guerrilla organisation had claimed responsibility immediately after the shooting.
Colonel Alon, 44 year-old assistant military attache at the Israeli Embassy in Washington was shot early on sunday morning outside his home in Chevy Chase, a quiet suburb just outside Washington.
There was no evidence of burglary or robbery and the killers....police believe there were at least two....apparently had been waiting for colonel Alon's arrival home from a party. His daughter arrived home twenty minutes before Colonel Along and entered the house in safety.
The person who fired the shots is believed to have hidden in bushes fringing the lawn of Colonel Alon's home. Several shots were fired and Colonel Alon was wounded in the chest. Mrs. Alon was entering the house at the time. She gave the alarm and returned to her husband, who was dead on arrival at hospital.
Israel's Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, accused Arab guerrillas of the assassination. General Dayan was speaking to reporters at Tel Aviv after the arrival of Colonel Alon's body from Washington in a U.S. military aircraft. Colonel Alon was due to end his three-year tour of duty in Washington in a few weeks.
