Background: The 39,000-ton tanker "Tasman Sea" was launched Dec 19 at Kawasaki dockyard at Kobe, the largest port and fourth biggest city in Japan.
Mrs Bryan todd, wife of the President of European Oil Company, New Zealand, flew from Wellington to name her. The ship will carry oil from the Persian Gulf to New Zealand; and is owned by Gulf Oil Corporation, U.S.A.
Since Japan built a 100,000-ton tanker named "Universal Apollo" in 1959, she has been receiving many orders from the U.S.A.; Greece, Monrovia, the Soviet Union and other countries. Japan will build more than 1,500,000 tons of ships for Foreign countries in 1961.
