Background: Mr. Takaichi Itaya, the chief of Japan's Self-Defence Force, was given military honours at the West German Defence Minister on Friday (17 July) when he arrived there for talks with West German Inspector-General Ulrich de Maiziere.

Mr. Italy's talks with the West German Inspector-General were reportedly unofficial.

Before entering the Defence Ministry building, Mr. Itaya and Mr. de Maiziere were saluted by uniformed officers, drawn up before the building.
