Background: North American skiing enthusiasts are discovering a new world. Three resorts in the lower Rocky Mountains of Canada are now offering the chance to ski on what is said to be the best snow in the world.
As every skier knows the best snow is dry and powdery. Normally its found at very high altitudes which makes it hard to reach. But now a Canadian company is offering package holidays which include a helicopter ride high into the Rockies. The aircraft sets down in the best possible conditions for the skiers.
The beginnings of the heli-ski holidays were humble. Helicopters were often unreliable in very cold weather. But as they improved so to did the standard of holiday. Now twin jet copters are used to airlift some 14 skiers at a time some 12-thousand feet to the virgin snow of the high Rockies.
A Canadian airline has now joined the snow rush and is offering holidays from Europe. Three resorts are now open.....two in Alberta and one in British Columbia.
