Background: Delegates to an African and Afro-American music symposium in Accra (4 March) attended an outdoor demonstration on Saturday by traditional Ghanaian instrumentalists.

The symposium was organised by the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana - and consisted mostly of a series of lectures and discussions.

About 150 people attended the symposium - most of them students of the University.

The purpose of the symposium was to explore the relationship between african and Afro-American music - both from a historical and a structural viewpoint.

(Six professors of music lectured at the symposium - three from the United States, two from Nigeria and one from Uganda. Of the students attending, more than half wee Americans who are studying in Ghana)
