Background: Martial law in Poland entered its third month last week. In Warsaw on Tuesday (9 February), police at checkpoints continued to stop motorists for questioning or to check identity papers, and people still queued for food and other essentials. At the Gdansk shipyards, formerly a stronghold of the Solidarity trade union, and the scene of a takeover by workers when martial law was imposed--it was quiet. The work force of more than 14,000 signed on and off as usual, passing the bronze monument outside the shipyard gates as they left work. At another busy shipyard, in Gdynia, the work force has been boosted by troops, previously responsible for border surveillance. Official figures say that three people from the Gdynia shipyard have been interned by the military authorities and "a few" Gdansk workers are being held.
