"Let our spirit be sound and friendly and let our examples in this sportevent be a topic during these days", they said, ending with the words: "Have a good time, be a good sport".

Said the District Officer of Hollandia: "I do hope that the contact between pupils of schools in the Australian and the Netherlands Territory will develop into a good and sound tradition".

Both the Australian and Dutch Administrative Officers considered this a very important meeting, remembering the words of Dr. J.T. Gunther, Assistant Administrator of TPNG, spoken in February this year:

"What we have got to work for - and work for hard - is to have the people "say to us, when the time comes: We are thankful for what you have done; "thankful for the heavy burden of financial assistance that the "Australian people so readily bore; thankful for the lead you have given "to the development of our economy; and we thank you sincerely for those "of your forbears who laid down their lives to drive a common enemy from "our soil. Our thanks is such that we recognise your rights to stay "amongst us as partners when we control our own destiny, and we certainly "recognise your right to retain your assets.

Background: Children from the Australian-administered trust territory of Papua and New Guinea recently paid a visit to Hollandia, capital of Dutch New Guinea.

Ninety-four children, looked after by their teachers, took part in the visit, which lasted from 18th to 23rd April and financially sponsored by the Australian administration, Roman Catholic and Protestant Missions, sports clubs and by Dutch school children who were the hosts and contributed from their savings.

Some of the Australian children arrived by air, others by sea in a small coastal steamer and a trawler. Most of them came from the Wewak district of the Australian-administered territory.
