Background: TWO JAZZ-LOVING SOVIET MUSICIANS WHO DEFECTED IN TOKYO ON FRIDAY PASSED THROUGH COPENHAGEN TODAY (MONDAY) ON THEIR WAY TO A SPECIAL CENTRE FOR DEFECTORS IN WEST GERMANY.

CAMERAMEN WERE KEPT AWAY FROM THE JET AIRCRAFT WHICH HAD BROUGHT THE TWO MUSICIANS FROM TOKYO WHEN IT LANDED AT COPENHAGEN'S KASTRUP AIRPORT. BOTH WERE WHISKED AWAY IN A CATERING VAN WHICH HAD DRAWN UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT.

LATER, BEFORE FLYING ON TO FRANKFURT, SECURITY OFFICIALS ALLOWED THEM A BRIEF NEWS CONFERENCE. THE TWO DEFECTORS ARE 27-YEAR-OLD BORIS MIDNEY AND IGOR BERECHTES, AGED 31.

THEY SAID THEIR DECISION TO DEFECT HAD BEEN MADE TWO YEARS AGO AND THE GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED TOUR TO JAPAN HAD GIVEN THEM THEIR FIRST OPPORTUNITY. THEY ADDED THAT THEY WANTED TO GO ON TO THE UNITED STATES TO JOIN A BAND.

THEIR TRIP TO TOKYO HAD BEEN WITH A MOSCOW VARIETY GROUP. THEY SOUGHT ASYLUM AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY ON FRIDAY, AND WERE GIVEN AMERICAN PASSPORTS FOR THE FLIGHT TO EUROPE.

JAPANESE PRESS REPORTS SAID THEY DEFECTED BECAUSE "WE WANT TO PLAY JAZZ FREELY AS MUSICIANS." IN THE SOVIET UNION, THEY WERE "COMPLETELY DEPRIVED OF OUR INIATIVE AND OUR INDIVIDUALITY IS CRUSHED."
EACH HAS LEFT A WIFE BACK IN MOSCOW.
