Background: A paradox of the energy crisis in the USA is that this country contains the world's largest coal deposits. But the coal is mainly of high sulphur content which, when burned, pollutes the atmosphere.
General Motors engineers have come up with a new coal-screening process--expensive, at two million dollars a unit--that "scrubs" the smoke from high sulphur coal and then converts the waste pollutants for use in land-filling operations. The device is being used in a coal-burning General Motors plant in Cleveland. Smoke ???itted from the plant chimneys looks more like steam than soot.
