    TRANSCRIPT:

REPORTER: "Jeff, perhaps you could tell us about your performance this afternoon?"

THOMSON: "I'm wrapped. I'm very pleased. I've come through with no creaks or groans, or no feelings whatsoever."

REPORTER: "In Brisbane in 12 days time you undergo a similar fitness test, but you'll be bowling at fast pace. Do you reckon that'll be somewhat of a formality?"

THOMSON: "It'll be a formality, that's right. Today, a few of them were fast pace."

    REPORTER: "The batsman thought so."

THOMSON: "That's right, Spence's not a bad player (indistinct).... he'd tell you".

REPORTER: "Peter, how do you think Jeff went this afternoon?"

SPENCE: "I thought he went very well. Obviously he can bowl faster than he did today, but he quite surprised me with some of his deliveries. A few balls did climb and got me back a couple of times. I'm a little bit sore, but I thought he bowled well, he got the ball to seam around quite a bit. He bowled a couple that really seemed back off the seam and a couple that went away. I thought he bowled very well."

REPORTER: "You've played with him in the past when he's been at his top. Do you think he's got the potential to come back in a similar way in the future?"

SPENCE: "I think so. He's a strong character and he's a very determined man and I think he could be back. If he is back i feel a bit sorry for the English batsmen, because I think they've got a fair bit a contend with."

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Thomson is a member of the 17-man Australian squad that will tour England this summer, and pay a five-match Silver Jubilee test series. Thomson dislocated his shoulder in December when he collided with another player while running to take a catch, and it was doubtful whether he would be fit in time to make the tour.

Background: INTRODUCTION: Cricket - and bad news for England's batsmen. Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson, who badly dislocated his right shoulder during a test match against Pakistan in December, passed a fitness test at the Sydney cricket ground on Wednesday (6 April). Thomson, regarded as possibly the world's fastest bowler before injuring his shoulder, bowled four overs at half pace in the practice nets, and afterwards said the shoulder was fine.

SYNOPSIS: Thomson used only a short run-up and was watched by Australian selector Neil Harvey as he bowled to New South Wales state director of cricket coaching, Peter Spence. Thomson felt confident enough to send down one or two fast deliveries. Following England's good batting performances in the centenary test match in Melbourne in March, Australia will be relying heavily on their pace attack for the forthcoming test series in England. With Dennis Lillee injured, Australia's bowling hopes could lie with Thomson. Much may have depened on this trial, but Thomson, as ever, was very casual about it. He undergoes a similar work-out in Brisbane on Monday the 18th (April), three days before the 17-man squad leaves for Britain.
