Background: A United States coast guard cutter on a rescue mission ......crunching through the ice of Lake Erie to the point whore two Canadian fishing vessels are stranded. The fishing boats --the Charles R. and the Kolbe --have been stuck in the ice for more than two days. On board are five men and a fourteen-year-old boy. The first boat got stranded after it had gone out to set nets. It radioed for help and the Kolbe set out, but it too got jammed in the ice, only a few feet from the Charles R. While rescue attempts were organized, an RCAF plane dropped supplies. It took the coast guard cutter eleven hour to battle its way to the scene-- a sixty mile trip from Erie, Pennsylvania.
