SYNOPSIS: In Phnom Penh on Sunday, the Executive prime Minister of the Khmer Republic, Lieutenant-General Sisowath Sirik Matak, attended a celebration marking a self-proclaimed victory by Khmer troops in Operation Reahou. After reviewing the guard of honour, the Prime Minister congratulated the commanders of the operation.

A large display of captured weapons, taken in the fighting, drew a number of spectators, including the Prime Minister.

People gathered on a hillside garden, in order to view the proceedings. The celebration was to include a military march-past, but first the large crowd was treated to a music concert -- provided by a popular army band.

Prime Minister Sirik Matak has been pleased with the success of his troops in Operation Reahou the name given to the recent and continuing fighting by Khmer troops in the area of the Vihear Sour marshes.

Located on the east bank of the Mekong River, the area is within twenty miles of the capital Phnom Penh. Although a clear-cut victory has not been gained, the Khmer troops have managed to hold their positions, in some of the heaviest fighting in the country this year. Last year, just before the wet season, the enemy took less than ten days to drive the Khmer troops from the Vihear Sour area.
