Background: Taiwanese soldiers turned out in the Taipei streets on Tuesday (1 August) to help clear away debris left in the wake of Typhoon Rita which swept across the island earlier last week.
Rita caused most damage in the southern parts of the country, and road and rail services were disrupted for three days during the height of the typhoon. Widespread damage to crops and livestock areas was also reported.
In the outskirts of Ping-tung, a derailed train was the major casualty of the typhoon. Students, soldiers and railway workers worked for two days to repair the damage. Both the driver and the fireman were killed during the derailment -- reports said they ha??? the train just on the brink of a collapsed bridge and that they insisted on staying with the train while the passengers were ???d. off. The engine later slid into the water and the men were drowned.
