Background: The youngest international trampoline team ever fielded by the United States was narrowly defeated when they competed against a visiting team from the Soviet Union at Kent, Ohio. It was the first of four trampoline competitions the veteran Russian team are to play against American athletes across the Untied States.

In this, the first of the four matches, the American national team scored 270.5 points against the Russian's score 274.6. Russia's Yougenef Yanis, the 17 year-old USSR men's trampoline champion, took the top honours in the men's competition, and a 14 year-old American girl, Shirley Grant, of Springfield, Illinois, won the top individual award in the women's competition.

The event was watched by a crowd of three thousand six hundred, who at first seemed relatively unacquainted with trampoline competition. But as each side started to pile up points, the audience warmed up an were soon cheering and booing the mostly young performers.

The competition consisted of a compulsory routine, followed by a free-style routine, with scores assessed on a basis similar to that of diving. The Russians have so far never lost an international trampoline competition with the United States.

Miss Grant's achievement of winning the women's individual trophy was particularly impressive as the Russian team included the Soviet national champion, Miss Tatania Chuminov.
