Background: Unemployed workers in Cleveland, Ohio, USA queued up May 12 to collect relief food parcels. Thirty-thousand people, now on the "breadline" and receiving welfare aid, were each given a 14-lb parcel of federal surplus corn meal, butter and dried milk.
VISNEWS filmed as workers, including many women and sick people, collected their food hand-outs at the distribution centre.
Authorities in Ohio's Guyahoga County say that relief payments to the unemployed will not be reduced. Food distribution has not been used for many years - but labour unions urged the use of food surpluses during the present crisis. The county may expand the distribution to include jobless workers, who are drawing unemployment insurance payments.
Latest figures for unemployment in USA issued last month showed a decline of about 3,800,000. This figure is almost one million below that for February and 500,000 below that for March. Government administrators predict a return to nearly normal level of unemployment by October - but the lag in employment while the economic activity has recovered to new peaks is causing considerable concern.
