Background: Sheikh Mujibar Rahman took a firm grip on running the affairs of Bangladesh on Wednesday (12 January) by assuming the position of Prime Minister at the head of a 12-man cabinet. He took office in a special swearing-in ceremony in Dacca.
Later during the ceremony, all members of the cabinet also swore allegiance to Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujib, who had arrived in Dacca two days earlier, stepped down form the largely ceremonial role of President, and handed over the post to Dr. Abu Sayeed Choudhury.
Earlier, Sheikh Mujib had said that Bangladesh would have a parliamentary form of government in accordance with the people's wishes.
