Background: A HEAVILY ARMED AND FULLY MOTORISED BATTLE GROUP OF THE UNITED STATES 24TH INFANTRY DIVISION LEFT REESE BARRACKS IN AUGSBURG, WEST GERMANY, DEC 4, ON THEIR WAY TO BERLIN.

THE UNIT, OF 1,500 MEN AND 250 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GUIDED ANTI-TANK ROCKETS, WAS TO TRAVEL ALONG THE AUTOBAHN FROM THE WEST GERMAN BORDER-POINT OF HELMSTEDT TO RELIEVE THE AMERICAN BATTLE GROUP WHICH REINFORCED THE WEST BERLIN GARRISON LAST AUGUST.

AMERICAN TROOP MOVEMENTS BETWEEN WEST BERLIN AND WEST GERMANY, WHICH ARE BEING CARRIED OUT AS A ROUTINE EXERCISE, HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED BY THE SOVIET NEWS AGENCY TASS AS "DANGEROUS MILITARY DEMONSTRATIONS". ON DEC 1, PART OF AN AMERICAN UNIT LEAVING WEST BERLIN WAS HELD UP FOR AN HOUR AT THE POINT OF ENTRY INTO EAST GERMANY.
