Background: Bela Bartok, the Hungarian composer, pianist, and folklorist, was born on 25th March 1881. Last week the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Bela Bartok Memorial Committee held a memorial session on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the musician's birth. A memorial stamp has been issued by the Hungarian Post to commemorate the event, and an exhibition entitled "Bela Bartok in the Fine Arts" has been opened. The show includes medals, paintings, and sculptures created by Hungarian artists.
With his lifelong friend, Zoltan Kodaly, Bartok is generally credited with creating the first Hungarian nationalistic music of universal an enduring interest. One of the most dominant and original figures of the first half of the 20th century, he is generally acknowledged, with Schoenberg and Stravinsky, as one of the three great masters of his time. He died of leukaemia in New York on September 26, 1945. It was only after his death that his music received wide acclaim.
