Background: A new claim for a remedy for baldness has been made by a man living in Bekescsaba, Hungary. Andras Banfi, who suffered from baldness himself six years ago, says he has used the preparation successfully on himself.

Interviewed for television in Hungary, Mr. Banfi said he developed the preparation after failing to find a solution to the problem in periodicals and literature available to him.

A four-week series of experiments was carried out with six patients of both sexes and of different ages. Three suffered from total baldness and three from partial.

Photographic records of the patients were made in a laboratory of the Debrecen University to Medical Science both before and after the tests.

A report issued after the experiments said successful results had been obtained. But further tests were planned with different patients over a longer period.

Mr. Banfi said he had remedied his own baldness by massaging the preparation into his head - morning and evening.

He refused to reveal the composition of the preparation, but said that as soon as a patent had been taken out on it, he would hand over the benefits of the invention to the Hungarian State.

SYNOPSIS: Hungarian inventor Andra Banfi, on the right, is a once-bald man who believes he has solved the age-old problem of baldness. Mr. Banfi, who lives at Bekescsaba, in south-east Hungary, says these photographs show how he looked in 1968, 1969, and 1970 after using his preparation twice a day.

This is how he looks today. Mr. Banfi said he developed the preparation after failing to find a solution in any literatures. A series of tests was initiated....with six patients of both sexes and of different ages. Three suffered from total baldness and three from partial. The preparation was massaged into the scalp morning and night.

Photographic records of the patients were taken in a laboratory of the Debrecen University of Medical Science. Comparisons were made regularly over the four weeks. A report issued at the and of the experiments said successful results had been obtained. Hair had appeared on hairless areas of the patients. But the report said it was felt further tests would be needed. Experiments with different patients over a longer period were planned. The tests would also be continued on the present patients over a period of two or three months.

Mr. Banfi refused to reveal the composition of the preparations, but said that as soon as a patent had been taken but on it, he would hand over the benefits of the invention to the Hungarian state.
