Background: The Jordanian Red Crescent Society has spread its activities far afield from the capital, Amman. One of its major functions is to look after the poor, the needy and victims of disaster--both natural and man-made. In Amman alone, the Society looks after three thousand families each month. Much of the Society's help comes from international societies abroad. But it also relies heavily on local donations and membership fees.

SYNOPSIS: This is the headquarters of the Jordanian Red Crescent Society.

The Red Crescent is the Equivalent of the Red Cross and it performs similar activities on behalf of the poor, the needy and victims of disaster--either natural or man-made.

From the Red Crescent's headquarters in Amman, the Society has spread its activities widely--to centres such s the towns of Madaba, Irbed, Es-Salt, El-Karak, Al-Quweiseh, Al-Jubeiha and the Bedouins district.

One of its major functions is to distribute food to the needy.

It also distributes clothing and medicines. In Amman alone, some three thousand families are cared for each month.

The society also has comprehensive training and re-training programmes. Every year, about seventy girls are taught sewing--free of charge. The first three girls in each course are given prizes of sewing machines.

There are also courses in literacy, typing and office work and cooking.

The Jordanian Red Crescent Society gets much of its food, clothing and medical equipment and supplies from international associations such as the International Red Cross and the Association of the Red Cross and Crescent Societies in Geneva.

Overseas and international institutions also provide financial help and practical equipment, such as ambulances. The Jordanian Society also depends heavily on membership fees and local donations to finance its operations.
