Background: In the sleepy South Vietnamese village of Hoc Mon, some 20 miles from Saigon, farmer Le Van Kia is being besieged by a steady stream of visitors from all over the neighbourhood.
The reason: a freak banana tree in his small plantation has proved unusually fruitful.
Reports say that 270 clusters have been counted on the tree and, with each cluster bearing about 20 bananas each, it has yielded more than 5,000 bananas. There are still flowers on the tree and a crop of at least a few hundred more bananas is expected to grow on it.
So the farmer has a busy time showing visitors from the neighbourhood the freak tree, and a tough time guarding it against curious boys who would like to examine the fruit personally.
