Background: On Wednesday in the Solent, the channel separating the Isle of Wight from the English south coast, Britain's 3-yacht team led by Prime Minister Edward Heath maintained its overall lead in the Admiral's Cup series of four ocean races.

Holland's J.S. Bouman was first in the Solent race, third of the series.

For Australia, Salacia II finished second, Ragamuffin third and Koomooloo fourth.

Britain now leads Australia by 22 points in the Cup, with the last event, the Fastnet race over 605 miles (973 kilometres) due on Saturday.

SYNOPSIS: In the four-race series of ocean races being run around Britain' shores, the Admiral's Cup, the lead of the three-yacht British team led by Prime Minister Edward Heath was maintained on Wednesday. The Solent race over 33 miles (53 kilometres) was won by Holland's J.S. Bouman, in Belita the Seventh, with Australian yachts second, third and fourth. Britain now has a lead of 22 points over Australia Britain's three yachts are Mr. Heath's "Morning Could" Cervantes Four" and "Prospect of Whitby".

For Australia, Salacia Two finished second, Ragamuffin third and Koomooloo fourth.

Mr. Heath skippered "Morning Cloud" to tenth place out of the 43 starters before returning to the House of Commons for the final important vote on the Government Industrial Relations Bill. Mr. Heath feels sure he will be free to take part in the final Admiral's Cup event on Saturday, the Fastnet race.
