Background: West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel arrived in Mauritania on Thursday (21 October) for talks with government officials. His stay in the country is the last stage of a West African tour. On his arrival, the German, Foreign Minister said that his discussions with President Ould Daddah would cover political questions of common interest including bilateral and international problems. Later at an official dinner, Mauritanian Foreign Minister Hamdi Ould Mouknass told Herr Scheel that his government expressed warmest congratulations to West German Chancellor Willy Brandt on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize.
SYNOPSIS: On the last stage of a West African Tour, West German Foreign Mauritania on Thursday for talks with government officials. Herr Scheel was accompanied by Mauritanian Foreign Minister Hamdi Ould Mouknass.
The German Foreign Minister,originally expected to stay in the capital city for three days, cut short his visit to 24 hours.
Mr. Ould Mouknass told guests at a dinner he gave for Herr Scheel that his government expressed the warmest congratulations to West German Chancellor Willy Brandt for winning the Nobel Peace prize. he said that the award crowned the success already achieved by Herr Brandt and his government with the conclusion of the four-power agreement on Berlin.
Herr Scheel later held discussions with Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah covering broad issues of bilateral and international problems.
