TRANSCRIPT: NKOMO: "In Zimbabwe and Namibia today we are not fighting -- we are not fighting against the puppet as such. We are fighting against those who have served the puppets and Africa should be very clear on that one. And the statements so far made by all the heads of state that have been published have made it perfectly clear that Africa, through the Organisation of African Unity, will not be misled. If there is to be any talks, we have never been against talks, it must be talks based on that understanding, on the understanding of the whole situation. They're talking about us, the Patriotic Front, having to go to conference with Bishop Abel Muzorewa. Zimbabwe was not colonised by Bishop Abel Muzorewa. (Laughter and applause). We have not picked up arms to fight against the Bishop, Bishop Abel Muzorewa. We picked up arms to fight against the imperialists and racists who are using the face of the Bishop as a shield (applause). We are not going to be diverted from the real situation and attack just a puppet, but that person who manipulates that puppet behind the scenes. And that person is Britain."
Mr Nkomo urged OAU members to offer material support, and not just resolution, in support of the fight against white supremacy in southern Africa. He said that while the Front was not against negotiations on the Zimbabwe Rhodesia situation, such negotiations would have to be based on the realities of the situation. He claimed the Front's guerrillas controlled almost 75 per cent of Zimbabwe Rhodesia.
