In Beirut, the French External Affairs Minister, Claude Cheysson, arrived on April 7 for talks with Lebanese Foreign Minister and deputy prime minister, Dr Elie Salem. Dr Salem spoke about the prospects of obtaining Israeli agreement to withdrawing all foreign troops from Lebanon and asked for French help in bringing this about. Reuters also reported that the two men discussed Lebanese requests for further economic aid, and for military supplies for its army. M. Cheysson also, had talks with President Amin Gemayel, prime minister Chafig Quazzan, and the president of the parliament, Kamel Al-Assad. In between the two world wars, France ruled Lebanon with a mandate from the League of Nations. Last year France sent a contingent of soldiers as part of the 5,000 strong multi-national peacekeeping force to Lebanon. During his visit M. Cheysson was expected to inspect the French contingent.
