Background: General Salan, former Commander-in-chief of the French forces in Algeria, arrived in Barcelona, Nov 1, on what he described as a "private visit". General Salan was one of the officers who demanded thee return of General de Gaulle to lead France in May 1958.
While in Barcelona the General seems to be taking things easy. On his first day in the city the General went on a walking tour, often stopping to talk to the people.
It has been suggested that Salan may have come to Spain to collect several papers he deposited there some time ago. The papers may be need if he is called as a witness i a trial of Pierre Lagaillarde.
Lagaillarde was arrested in January this year for his part in an uprising of the Algerian white settlers.
General Salan said he intended to visit Madrid where he has friends.
He is expected to return to Paris in about a week.
