Background: The Director General of UNESCO Monsieur Amadou M'Bow, arrived in Abidjan on Sunday (19 December) during celebrations marking the organisation's 30th anniversary. His five day official visit was made at the invitation of Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
SYNOPSIS: M. M'Bow began his visit at the Presidential Palace, where he was met by President Houphouet-Boigny and other leading dignitaries, including the President of the National Assembly, the Minister of Education and the Minister of State.
Earlier, at a news conference, Monsieur M'Bow said his presence in the country illustrated the excellent relations between the Ivory Coast and UNESCO. During his stay the Director General will attend a lecture given by the former Mali ambassador, M. Hampate Ba, who will speak on UNESCO's contribution to world peace and understanding. The celebrations also include an arts and film festival on UNESCO's achievements and on Monday (20 December) a reception was held in Monsieur M'Bow's honour.
