Background: A SMALL BUT HEAVY SURF WAS RUNNING AT NEWPORT FOR THE METROPOLITAN SURF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.

MORE THAN 20 SYDNEY CLUBS WERE CONTESTING THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE MARCH-PAST WENT TO COLLAROY, A NORTHERN BEACH CLUB.

THE MAIN INTEREST OF THE DAY WAS THE SENIOR SURF RACE: ENTRANTS INCLUDED SEVERAL OLYMPIC SWIMMERS AND PAST AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS.

THE POPULAR FAVOURITE FOR THE SURF RACE WAS TERRY BUCK, WHO HAS BEEN ON TOP FORM IN RECENT WEEKS. THE BOAT RACE BEGAN WHILE THE SWIMMERS HEADED OUT THROUGH THE CHOPPY SURF, WHICH PROVED HARD TO HANDLE. ON A SMALL WAVE, DICK LING BEAT TERRY BUCK TO THE BEACH, TAKING THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE SENIOR BOAT RACE WAS WON BY FRESHWATER. IN OTHER EVENTS, PETER BLAKE OF NAROUBRA CLUB WON TWO JUNIOR SURF TITLES - THE ONLY DOUBLE OF THE DAY.
