Background: SIXTY MILES IN JUST TWO AND A HALF HOURS - OR THEREABOUTS. IT'S THE LEISURELY TARGET SET FOR THE 250 ENTRANTS IN YESTERDAY'S (SUNDAY) ANNUAL LONDON-TO-BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RUN. ANYTHING BETWEEN 20 AND 28 MILES AN HOUR WILL DO TO QUALIFY FOR THE RUN IN WHICH THE CAR HAS TO BE AT LEAST 57-YEARS-OLD.

CARS FROM BRITAIN, DENMARK, BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY AND AMERICA PRESENTED AN INTERNATIONAL LINE-UP FOR THE START IN HYDE PARK WATCHED BY 25,000 SPECTATORS. THERE WERE II NON-STARTERS AND OF THE 239 CARS FLAGGED AWAY FROM 8. A.M. ONWARDS, ONLY 19 FAILED TO ARRIVE.

THIS YEAR, THE ONLY THING BREAKING WITH TRADITION WAS THE WEATHER. FOR ONCE IT WAS FINE AND AS THE CARS - DRIVEN BY BELT, CHAIN OR SHIFT ACCORDING TO AGE - CHUGGED ALONG MADEIRA DRIVE ON THE BRIGHTON SEAFRONT, THE MAYOR OF THE TOWN, WAS WAITING TO AWARD PUNCTUALITY MEDALS.

THESE MEDALS ARE REPLICAS OF THE ONE GIVEN TO DRIVERS WHO TOOK PART IN THE FIRST LONDON-TO-BRIGHTON RUN 66 YEARS AGO TO CELEBRATE THE LIFTING OF RESTRICTIONS ON MOTOR CARS - SUCH AS MEN WALKING IN FRONT WITH RED WARNING FLAGS.

THE FIRST CAR TO CROSS THE FINISHING LINE WAS A 1901 8 H.P. PROGRESS, FIVE YEARS YOUNGER THAN THE ARNOLD DOG-CART - 1 /12 H.P. AND THE OLDEST ENTRANT.
