Background: Processions, national mourning and pubic flagellation marked Ashura -- the Tenth of Muharram in Karachi on Tuesday (13 January).
Ashura celebrates the centuries-old martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain and his 72 companions. It's an Islamic festival...recognising Hussain as the grandson of the prophet Mohummad.
Thousands of devotees paid homage to Hussain and other martyrs of Kerbala by taking part in demonstrations of sacrifice and solemn processions.
Many mourners cut their heads open with small daggers. Others slashed their bodies with sharp, curved swords...still others lashed themselves with razor blade whips.
Several people finished the day in hospital receiving treatment for serious wounds.
