    Background: The highest award of the American National Geographic Society, the Hubbard Medal, was presented to British Antarctica expedition leader Sir Vivian Fuchs by President Eisenhower at the White House, Washington, Feb 4.

    The inscription speaks of Sir Vivian's "brilliant leadership" and "extraordinary contributions" to geographic knowledge. The medal has been awarded only seventeen times.

    The President spent some time chatting with Sir Vivian and Lady Fuchs and Sir Vivian told him that he planned to return to Antarctica in November.
