Background: Large-scale Iranian offensives are claimed to have been crushed by Iraq. The fighting has been taking place in Iran's oil-producing province of Khuzestan. The Iraqi's claim that Iranians have suffered heavy losses both of military hardware and men. The Gulf war, which has been continuing for 17 months, has resulted in severe casualties for both sides. Now Iraq has asked the Red Cross to press Iran to remove the Iranian dead from the battlefields. The war, which broke out following a series of border clashes, has left the Iraqis claiming full control of the Shatt El-Arab waterway which separates the two countries.
