SYNOPSIS: President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya took time out form his normal duties and affairs on Thursday for an important ceremony at the University of Nairobi. The occasion was the Third Congregation for the Conferment and Presentation of degrees and diplomas to several hundred students.
President Kenyatta was joined on the dais by other guests and officials.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Professor B.A. Ogot, opened the ceremonies by constituting the assembly and addressed the gathering. Students then came forward to receive their degrees or diplomas from the various deans of faculties. President Kenyatta, who is Chancellor of the University, had a few words to say to the gathering. Then he personally presented awards to some of the higher graduates. By far the biggest number of graduates were in the Arts, with Commerce and Science also accounting for large numbers. Some twenty-six students also received diplomas in journalism -- a subject on which President Kenyatta has had a lot to say recently. In one speech earlier this month, he spoke about the need to prevent what he called the abuse of the impact of broadcasting, and he said journalists had to show unusual qualities of responsibility and integrity.
