Background: Boxing -- and Spain's Alfredo Evangelista has retained his European Heavyweight title against Frenchman Lucien Rodriguez. The fight took place in Liege, belgium on Friday (2 March) -- and was over almost before it had begun.

SYNOPSIS: In the first round the champion looked like a slow-moving Spanish bull confronting a dancing French matador.

The four-and-a-half thousand spectators were noisily involved in the progress of the fight. An hour before the start Evangelista had weighed in at 99.6 kilogramme (219« pounds) and Rodriguez at 93.0 kilogramme (205 pounds). Seconds into the first round -- and the champion is down -- caught off guard by powerful left hook from Rodriguez.

But he was back on his feet in a flash and the crowd roared their approval.

The end of round one -- and -- as it turned out -- almost the fight itself.

Round two -- and Evangelista has the challenger pinned to the ropes with fierce body punches. An instant later a blow to the head sent Rodriguez sprawling. The count began with him on the floor -- but ended after he was back on his feet.

Belgian referee Des Wert had counted the Frenchman out -- Evangelista was a surprised and emotional winner -- and the crowd booed, whistled and catcalled their disappointment.

Afterwards Rodriguez told reporters "I was hit all right, but the referee must have been rushing to count ten like that -- but a decision is a decision and I have lost." It also seemed as if Evangelista was reluctant to accept his victory.
