Background: INTRODUCTION: Church and Government leaders in Poland were brought together under one roof on Tuesday (6 January) to see the American evangelist Dr. Billy Graham receive an honourary doctorate from the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw.
SYNOPSIS: The presentation was made in the Baptist Church in Warsaw. The Academy was represented by its rector, Dr. Waldemar Gatspray. Government Minister Jerzy Kuberski, head of the Religious Affairs office, was in the audience, with representatives of other churches including the Roman Catholic, and of the United States and other foreign embassies.
Dr. Graham, who was on a four-day private visit to Poland, received the degree because of his work in bringing different denominations together. There are 6,000 Baptists in Poland, but on his last visit thousands more came to hear his particular brand of fiery evangelism. The 10-day "Christmas Crusade" in 1978 saw Dr. Graham preaching from a Catholic pulpit for the first time.
The presentation of the degree was the climax of Dr. Graham's visit. He left Poland yesterday (7 January) and went on to another four-day visit, this time to Hungary, where he was due to receive another honourary doctorate in the city of Debrecen.
