Background: INTRODUCTION On New Years' Day the traditional ski jumping competition at Germisch-Partenkirchen in West Germany was held for the twenty-fifth year.
SYNOPSIS: The tournament is held on four hills in West Germany and Austria. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen competitors use the jump that was built for the Winter Olympics in 1936. But it's undergone extensive renovations in recent years. Nearly 90 competitors from 14 countries took part.
Jochen Danneberg from East Germany makes his jump.
Danneberg jumped well and won the competition with a total of 235 points.
Danneberg was Austria's Toni Innauer. Innauer, as last year's winner, was one of the favourites for this year's title. However,he scored 222 points, finishing second to Danneberg.
Another East German, Herald Duschek, finished in third place with 220 points.
Filling fourth place was Austrian, Henry Glass, with 219 points.
