Background: INTRODUCTION: About 50 people have been occupying the Swedish embassy in Santiago to press Chile's military rulers into finding them homes. Another group to hopeless people have protested by moving into two churches in the city.

SYNOPSIS: Many of the homeless, victims of an acute housing shortage in Santiago, have been living in slums like this. The groups who've recently occupied embassies and churches could face what is known in Chile as "relegation". They can be sent to remote areas, where jobs and accommodation are almost impossible to find.

The Swedish embassy was filmed on Tuesday (27 January), 14 days after the protesters had entered the gates. Chile's intelligence service said these occupations were planned by underground left-wing parties. It claimed they were part of a plot for a series of bombings and general unrest before Augusto Pinochet starts a new eight-year term as President in March. The intelligence service said the plan was disclosed when Carlos Montes Cisternas, Secretary-General of the banned Unitarian Popular Action Movement (MAPU), was arrested in December.

The homeless in the embassy grounds said on Thursday (28 January) they would leave if Swedish diplomats promised they wouldn't be arrested. But they cancelled this decision, and said they would start a second hunger strike. The first was started on January the 21st, but was halted after local doctors were called in.
