SYNOPSIS: "The accident happened when a good train smashed into a crowded passenger train shortly before down near the city of Torun in central Poland.

The official Polish news agency PAP said the accident apparently was caused by the freight trains's failure to stop at a red light. The front two coaches of the passenger train were smashed and derailed.

The passenger train was travelling from the Baltic resort of Kolobrzeg to lodz in central Poland. Many of the dead and injured were holiday makers returning for the start of the new school year. A government commission has been set up to investigate the has been set up to investigate the crash, the worst rail disaster in Poland's history.

The leader of the Polish Communist Party, Mr. Edward Gierek, who is grappling with a major labour crisis, flew to the scene of the crash. He was accompanied by the Polish Prime Minister, Mr. Edward Babiuch.

It's reported that the official inquiry will try to determine if the goods train went through a red light. There were reports that it was travelling on the wrong track at the time of the accident.
