Background: The legal battle over the deportation of two Palestinian mayors from the occupied West Bank is now in its final stages at the Israeli Supreme Court, in Jerusalem. The two mayors were deported in May after six Israelis were killed in a Palestinian guerrilla attack in the town of Hebron.

SYNOPSIS: Mayors Fahd Al-Qawassme of Hebron and Mouhammed Milhem of Halhoul were deported six months ago, accused of anti-Israeli incitement. They arrived at the Supreme Court under tight security, and appeared fit, despite their ten day hunger strike protest. their Israeli lawyers, Mrs Felicia Langer, told the court the deportation order should be withdrawn because it was contrary to Jordanian law and international convention. The prosecution described her defence as irrelevant in what has become one of the most controversial cases to come before the court.

Arab feeling on the court wrangle is running high. Outside, hundreds of Arab demonstrators chanted "freedom, unity, liberty" as the two mayors were escorted away by eight policemen. The pair are now being held in an Israeli prison near Tel Aviv awaiting the final outcome of the case. The Supreme Court is still hearing legal arguments from the defence and prosecution, but a ruling is expected by the end of the week. (Friday 7 November).
