Background: Britain's Prince Philip jostled through exotically clad crowds on Saturday (9 May ) in a gay street carnival celebrating the 300th anniversary of London's Covent Garden Fruit and Vegetable Market.

The celebration caught the flavour of the market's colourful history. It used to be the home of Nell Gwynn, the celebrated girl orange seller who became a favourite of King Charles II.

A girl dressed as Nell Gwynn handed the Prince an orange as he pushed through the milling crowd. The celebration was also by way of being farewell to Covent Garden. It will be moved in 1973 to a new site at Nine Elms in South London.

Work on the site began formally on Saturday when the Prince gave the signal over closed circuit television to begin work on the new market.
