Background: AN AMERICAN HAS OFFERED ONE MILLION DOLLARS FOR A VETERAN CAR KEPT IN A DANISH MUSEUM. THE CAR, BUILT IN 1886, IS A HAMMEL AND RUNS ON IRON WHEELS. ON SUNDAY, IT WILL BE BACK ON THE STREETS AGAIN, AS SHOW PIECE IN A LOCAL FESTIVAL AT ELSINORE.

THE CAR WAS LAST IN USE IN 1954 WHEN IT COMPETED IN THE LONDON-BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RACE - AND WON FIRST PRIZE. IT WENT ALONG AT 3 3/4 MILES AN HOUR (ABOUT 6 KMS). AFTER THAT FEAT, IT WENT BACK TO THE MUSEUM IN ELSINORE.

THE CAR WAS BUILT BY THE MECHANIC URBAN JOHANSEN FOR HAMMEL'S THE COPENHAGEN CAR MANUFACTURERS. THE TWO-CYLINDER 3 1/2 HORSE-POWER ENGINE TURNS OVER AT 500 REVOLUTIONS A MINUTE, AND RUNS ON LOW GRADE PETROL.
