Background: Scotland followed up their 3-1 defeat of Wales last Thursday by beating Northern Ireland 3-nil at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on Saturday (8 May) in the second of their matches in the British Soccer Championship.

On the same day, England's new look soccer team beat Wales at Cardiff, 1-nil in their first match of the Championship series.

In the Scottish match, the home side outclassed their rivals and won with goals by Archie Gemmill in the 24th minute, Don Masson in the 47th, and Kenny Dalglish in the 52nd minute. They were also awarded a penalty from which Bruce Rioch failed to score.

But Scottish manager Willie Ormond, cannot be too happy with his striking force in spite of their having scored six times in tow matches this week. As in the game against Wales, Scotland were the masters throughout the match, yet they could not make the ragged Iris defence pay fully in goals.

In the Welsh match, England's manager, Don Revie, was looking beyond the Championship to England's first World Cup qualifying tie in Finland in June, and he experimented with several new young players, partly because of injuries to experienced men.

The goal came in the 57th minute from winger Peter Taylor of third Division club, Crystal Palace. His only previous appearance in a full international has been in the role of substitute.

Wales had started at a fierce pace under the hot sun. But they began to feel the effects as England gradually grew in confidence and the visitors emphasised their superiority in the second half.
