Background: With the standstill of air flights to Beirut following the clashes between Palestinian guerrillas and Lebanese government forces, two British journalists set out from Famagusta harbour in Cyprus in a chartered yacht on Thursday (10 May) to reach Beirut.

Middle East Airlines is using Nicosia airport as headquarters for all services while Beirut International remains closed. Although latest reports indicate that ceasefire arrangements appear to be taking effect in Lebanon, Beirut airport is still closed.

Television viewers in Haifa have been watching Lebanese stations as well as their own service for news reports on the Lebanese situation. these reports emphasised the diplomatic initiatives taken by many arab states to resolve the conflict between guerrillas and government forces. Israeli television focused attention on the May 10 military operations against the Palestinians. Shots of wrecked refugee camp near Beirut airport were shown during the report.
