Background: Latest film from civil war-racked North Indonesia illustrates results of the battle between anti-Communist rebels and Government troops.
Menado, capital of North Celebes, standing on the edges of a smouldering volcano and surrounded by hilly green terrain is now the base for Government anti-rebel operations. The rebels were controlling the city in June.
Tondano, also filmed, was the scene of a big Government push to take Tomohon and Kinilow, the civil and military headquarters respectively of the rebel regime.
The Indonesian Government have just announced that Tomohon, the last major rebel stronghold had fallen. They also claimed that more than 3,000 rebel troops surrounded in the area.
At the airport damaged rebel planes give some idea of their air force. Lt. Col. Rukmito, in charge of the anti-rebel operations, points out the charred remains of a PBY Catalina flying boat, a Mustang fighter and a B-26 bomber. Reports indicated that the rebels had 11 planes, including these three.
But there is another side to this strange war. Fifty families of rebel soldiers are being looked after by the Government in a theatre converted into lodgings while the head of the family is away at the war - fighting the Government.
And in Menado, as the war was going on just four miles away, the people were celebrating independence day as if everything was normal. Processions were organised by the Communist Party and the Communist Trade Union, both of which were banned during the rebel regime and which have just been legalised.
