BEDOUIN: "The land which the Israeli Government is taking is not, all of them is not for the air fields as you hear of them from the radio or the TV. There is no one word in the law which is talking about the airfields. We are not against the airfields, but the first time they tell us that they are going to take only forty thousand, then they tell us that they are going to take eighty thousand, now the law is talking about one hundred fifty thousand dunams which is area enough for more than five to ten airfields."

ISRAELI: "Why should the Israeli government, I would say, get used of their different situation, of the process of the evacuation of Sinai, and use the situation in order to maintain and apply an anti-democratic legislation towards the Bedouin?"

Background: About two hundred Bedouin arabs have demonstrated outside the Knesset in Jerusalem to protest against what they call the grossly inadequate compensation offered by the government for the seizure of their desert pastures. The land is to be used for two new air bases.
The target for these Bedouins' demonstration is a bill before the Knesset, which would clear the way for confiscation of some of their land. The Israeli Air Force needs new bases to replace those in territories given up under the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. They say a law is proposed that would be directed against an ethnic group, the Bedouin. They want the opportunity to negotiate with the government over compensation.
