Background: Egyptian Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Abed, Rab el-Nabi Hafez arrived in Israel on Sunday (7 February) for a five-day visit. General Hafez's visit follows one made to Egypt in late December by Israel's Chief of Staff, Rav-Aluf Rafael Eitan. The Egyptian military was accompanied by four other military and air force officials. During their stay in Israel, the Egyptian visitors were expected to tour military training camps and Israeli Air Force bases, as well as the Merkava tank production line. On Sunday afternoon, they were received by a military guard of honour at General Staff Headquarters in Tel Aviv. In the course of their stay, they will meet with Defence Minister Ariel Sharon and the entire general staff. The Egyptians will return home on Friday (12 February).
