Background: Thousands of Greek-Cypriots flocked into the old town of Nicosia for the funeral of the two Greeks who were murdered during the weekend's Turkish riots. A great procession followed the bodies as they were taken along roads outside the old town walls and youths in the crowd carried flags and wreaths.

There was no further trouble, however, as a heavy guard of tanks and armed soldiers lined the route.

Following these two Greek deaths, two Turks wore murdered -- an auxiliary policeman and a married woman. It was on the same day as the funeral that the Governor of Cyprus, Sir Hugh Foot, announces drastic new security measures, including a night curfew for all main towns of the island, including the suburbs of Nicosia, where inter-community tension is running particularly high.
