Background: At least 13 people died in a violent gun-battle in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv early on Thursday morning (6 March) after Arab guerrillas launched a seaborne attack on the city. The dead include seven of the guerrillas, three women civilians and three Israeli soldiers.
Eight guerrillas landed in two rubber boats on the seashore and shot their way to a seafront hotel where they took several hostages on the upper floors.
The guerrillas then began firing rifles, machine-guns and bazookas in all directions. The battle continued throughout the night.
At dawn Israeli shock troops stormed the hotel and during the battle seven of the guerrillas were killed and the hotel was thought to have been cleared.
But about midday on Thursday (6 March) fresh firing broke out from the devastated building which sent crowds on the streets below racing for cover. One of the guerrillas had survived and had started shooting. He was taken by Israeli troops.
The angry crowed gathered in front of the hotel tried to attack the ambulance in which the body of one guerrilla was removed from the scene.
