    Background: IN DAKAR ON WEDNESDAY AN AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BY THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT AND THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR FINANCING FURTHER EXPLORATION OF THE MINERAL DEPOSITS OF EAST BENGAL.

    UNDER THE AGREEMENT THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUND WILL PROVIDE 438-THOUSAND DOLLARS U.S. FOR A STUDY OF POTENTIAL GOLD AND DIAMOND MINING AREAS. IT WILL BE THE SECOND PHASE OF AN EXPLORATION PROGRAMME WHICH WAS STARTED FOUR YEARS AGO.

    THE TOTAL COST OF THE SECOND PHASE WILL BE 786-THOUSAND DOLLARS U.S. THE FIRST STAGE OF THE EXPLORATION WORK COST 1,640,000 DOLLARS U.S., OF WHICH THE UNITED NATIONS FUND PROVIDED NEARLY 953-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BY THE SENEGALESE FINANCE MINISTER, M. JEAN COLLIN, AND THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUND, M. MARCEL CROISIER.
